Warm Grapefruit Tea

This refreshing recipe for warm grapefruit tea was first published in the February 2008 issue of Body+Soul.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups ruby red grapefruit juice (squeezed from 2 grapefruits)
  • 2 to 4 tablespoons honey
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1/2 teaspoon whole allspice berries

Directions

  1. In a medium pot, combine juice, honey, cinnamon, allspice, and 1/2 cup water. Bring to a boil over high heat; strain and discard solids. Serve with a grapefruit segment or strip of zest.

    If you do choose to use bottled juice, make sure you get juice that IS NOT FROM CONCENTRATE! Simply Orange and Minute Maid Pure Squeezed are two lines available in grocery stores in our area that carry Grapefruit juice not from concentrate. If your store doesn't carry it, you can always ask them to order some for you.

    If you happen to live near a Whole Foods Market or a Stew Leonard's, you can buy bottled fresh squeezed grapefruit juice in their produce department for about $7. Cheaper than juicing whole grapefruits, but you still get all the health benefits of non processed, raw grapefruit juice.

    I really like this recipe, so I made it again tonight to go along with the Whole Living Challenge, but this time I used bottled juice since it was only about $3 at the store (grapefruit were $1 ea.); it was much less work and mess than doing the tea from scratch. The taste is excellent again, though I'll always stick to 4 tbsp. honey to counter the bite. I'm not sure if all the same good nutrients are still in the bottled version (no pulp), but what I bought wasn't from concentrate.

    I tried this, not only did it taste great, it also mad me feel great. Very good drink for the cold winters

    Honey is very good for you and worth the calories it contains. For added health benefits, use raw honey.

    I didn't have whole allspice or cinnamon, but it turned out good. The honey caramelizes a bit and gives it a good flavor, though grapefruit is naturally rather harsh/bitter.

    What is the adverse reactions possible if you take high blood pressure medication. This sounds so good. I do remember hearing about not having grapefruit with these meds. Does anyone know?

    Those worried about the honey adding too many calories could try stevia instead.

    I really enjoyed this, but I must not have let it steep long enough to taste much of the spices. I will drink this again

    Actually you can call it tea, doesn't have to have tea leaves, only spices and other organic matter, such as juice

    This looks like a wonderful warm drink but where is the tea? You can't call this tea without some kind of tea leaves in it. It would be wonderful with some green or white tea, and very healthy too.
