Special Eco-Delivery

The holidays are all about food, family, fun -- and fuel. Each year, we pack up our gifts and send them around the world, burdening an already overtaxed postal system and wasting valuable resources in the process.

This year, do your part to lessen the yuletide impact. Save cash and reduce carbon emissions by sending gifts by ground, rather than overnight, which usually involves a gas-guzzling plane; the U.S. Postal Service recommends mailing by Monday, December 15, to ensure holiday delivery. For friends who live nearby, skip the mailbox altogether and enlist a bike courier to pedal your package to its destination. (Check out deliver-it.com for one near you.)

When it comes to preparing your fragile presents for transit, forgo the Styrofoam peanuts. Instead, get eco-creative by using edible peanuts in the shell, air-popped popcorn, or tattered T-shirts. For an extra-festive touch, fill the box with peppermint candies. It doesn't get any sweeter than this.
