Resources to Help Make Meditation a Habit

You need company on the road to mindfulness: a teacher, a meditation group, a course -- at the very least a CD or podcast of guided meditation. And thanks to technology, you can now "sit" with some of the most inspiring teachers in the world.

Three Websites to Visit
Dharmaseed.org: Free downloadable talks and meditations from a number of teachers. Search for Joseph Goldstein's 15-minute "Meditation Instructions" or "Big Sky" morning meditation.

Soundstrue.com: This online store offers a rich selection of guided meditations:

  • "Unplug: For an Hour, a Day, or a Weekend"; $27, by Sharon Salzberg. Her kit includes two CDs of guided meditations, contemplation cards, and a guidebook.
  • "Meditation for Beginners"; $15, by Jack Kornfield, PhD, cofounder of Spirit Rock Meditation Center. A book of basic instructions and a CD of meditations.
  • "Mindfulness for Beginners"; $20, by Jon Kabat-Zinn, PhD, who developed the brilliant Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction course. Five meditations for those starting a practice.

Tricycle.com: This is the website for the magazine that covers the three traditions of Buddhism. Search for a nearby meditation group or find support by joining the virtual community at Commit to Sit. (Visit tricycle.com/meditate.) Their anthology "Commit to Sit: Tools for Cultivating a Meditation Practice from the Pages of Tricycle" ($17) will introduce you to a world of teachers.
