Taste Test: Granola

If you can't make your own granola, pick a ready-made one that's free of refined sugar and trans fats. We sampled 28 flavors from 11 brands to find our favorites.

The Baker, Pecan Granola
Our hands-down favorite; full of thick clusters and whole pecans, it has a nutty, fresh-baked taste.

Cascadian Farm Oats & Honey Granola
A healthy version of a classic, this granola is good for topping frozen yogurt or mixing with your favorite dried fruits and nuts.

Nature's Path Organic Ginger Zing Granola
This certified-organic granola is baked with ginger, whole cashews, molasses, cloves, and nutmeg, giving it a spicy, nutty flavor.

Health Valley Low-Fat Granola, Tropical Fruit
Crisp rice offers a lighter, cereal-like texture; dried pineapple and papaya stay moist in a separate pouch until you're ready to eat.

Bear Naked Granola, Fruit and Nut
Plump cranberries and raisins add flavor and lots of almonds, pecans, walnuts, and sesame seeds provide "good" fat and protein.

My favorite is FEED Granola's Cranberry Coconut! All 6 of their flavors are great, but the combo of coconut, berries, and dark chocolate make this one my favorite. They company is all about making products that are very healthy and preserves the environment. They sell it at Costco and Harris Teeter, and I hope Safeway picks it up soon so it's more convenient for me to get. You can get it online, too. http://feedgranola.com/products
