The good news about reusable water bottles is that they reduce waste. The bad news: Some can leach harmful chemicals into your water. In order to distinguish the safe from the not-safe, check the number on the bottom of the bottle. Plastics numbered 3,6, and 7 have come under scrutiny. Stainless steel or aluminum bottles make good, durable choices, as do those from non-leaching 1,2,3,4, and 5 plastic. Here, stylish bets to keep you hydrated and healthy (clockwise from front):
- SIGG bottles' funky aluminum designs include dozens of shapes, sizes, colors, and cap types.
- Klean Kanteen stainless-steel vessels come in 18-, 27- and 40-ounce sizes with several cap styles.
- Nalgene now offers its classic bottles in safer, high-density polyethylene (HDPE), a translucent plastic that won't leach into your beverage.
