A recent study reviewed alternative therapies often used to help weight loss, including appetite suppressants such as hoodia. Though many treatments didn't fare well under scrutiny, one study found that only those participants who combined a diet plan with hypnosis were able to maintain significant weight loss over an 18-month period.
But was it just a fluke?
"If you work with a trained individual, in combination with a diet and exercise plan, there is some evidence that hypnosis could work," says Christine Gerbstadt, M.D., of the American Dietetic Association.
The catch: You may have to walk in a believer.
"Many studies rate the 'susceptibility' of an individual to hypnosis," she explains. "This means the open-minded will find more success with this approach than skeptics."
