Keep the Air Clean

For the estimated 75 percent of American households using air fresheners, that quick fix for a nasty odor might be leaving more than a hint of "mountain rain." A recent Natural Resources Defense Council investigation found that 12 out of 14 common air fresheners (including those marked "all natural" or "unscented") contained hormone-disrupting chemicals -- though you wouldn't know it by reading the labels. To bypass unpleasant smells, improve air circulation with proper attic vents and open windows whenever possible. For the odd stinky clothes hamper or kitchen compost, try a more natural fix: an essential-oil-based spray.

Make Your Own
