Most sunscreen formulas are now enriched with antioxidants (in many cases, the same ones that should be appearing on your plate). "Sun damage starts on the skin's surface, so it makes sense to have an extra level of free-radical protection," says Loretta Ciraldo, M.D., a dermatologist in Miami. She also recommends using an antioxidant-rich face and body lotion overnight, since inflammation brews for hours after sun exposure.

Scan labels for antioxidants like green tea, soy, mushroom extracts, lycopene, vitamins A, C, or E, which should be high up on the ingredients list.

Once you've started eye-balling labels, you'll want to consider the type of sunscreen and, of course, the SPF. Chemical sunscreens rely on ingredients like mexoryl, avobenzone, or oxybenzone for UV protection. They spread easily, feel light, and can offer sky-high SPFs, but they're more likely to irritate sensitive skin than physical sunscreens, which are made from the minerals titanium dioxide or zinc oxide.

Physical sunscreens, on the other hand, top out at around SPF 45, but they're nonirritating and safe for all skin types, including kids'.

Dermatologists agree that SPF 30 offers the best protection for most people, as long as it's a broad-spectrum formula (which protects against UVA and UVB rays). If you burn easily, choose SPF 45; if you burn practically instantaneously, make it SPF 70. The concentrations of chemical sunscreens needed to reach a high SPF, however, can bother sensitive types; Ciraldo advises doing a patch test to be safe.

Whatever sunscreen you pick, use at least an ounce (that's two tablespoons) for your entire body.

Most of us typically use only 25 to 50 percent of the sunscreen we ought to, research shows. That means the SPF on skin is actually lower than what's on the label.

Even the most devoted sunscreen users should perform a monthly skin self-exam -- it can save your life. "A mole can change or pop up practically overnight," Ciraldo says. "You don't want months to go by before it gets noticed."

The right SPF may be a tent pole in your UV defense plan, but it's not the only thing that can protect you this summer. An all-bases strategy also incorporates the right foods and stress-management techniques to keep your defenses high and your vulnerability low.
