Healthy Cleansers

Organic veggies, filtered water, vitamins -- these are some of the simple things we buy in the name of wellness. Just as those products restore and balance the body, our beauty buys have a similar effect on the skin.
In the first Whole Living Healthy Skin Awards, our experts found the best products for five essential beauty routines: cleansing, nourishing, antiaging, and targeted treatment.
Washing your skin should be like exercise: detoxifying and energizing. But as with working out, some people go overboard, using harsh cleansers. Not cool. The effective but gentle picks on the following slide leave skin calm and collected. Massage the cleanser in for about a minute so it has time to remove debris and makeup, then rinse it away.

Expert Pick: Face Wash
Neutrogena Naturals Purifying Facial Cleanser is paraben- and sulfate-free and features willow bark extract to thoroughly clean skin, says New York City dermatologist Francesca Fusco, M.D. ($8, neutrogena.com)
Expert Pick: Body Cleanser
Aveda Rosemary Mint Hand and Body Wash smells like an herb garden in your shower. Its ingredients are invigorating, and the rosemary is said to improve mental clarity, says aesthetician Mary Schook. ($16, aveda.com)
Reader Pick: Body Cleanser
Dove Go Fresh Beauty Bar is a favorite for one simple reason: It doesn't dry out skin. The green tea and cucumber scent gives this beauty classic an uplifting bonus. ($4.30, drugstore.com)
Reader Pick: Face Wash
Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser won the hearts of readers for its super-gentle formula (and affordable price). The wash eliminates makeup and dirt in one step. ($8.50, drugstore.com)
You already know that a balanced diet leads to healthy skin. And that when you start eating too much junk and not enough veggies, it can show up as redness, dullness, and dryness. The same healthy fats and antioxidants you put in your body can also help when applied topically. Make one of these hydrators part of your routine, taking time to gently rub it in thoroughly to help relax the muscles and soften the skin.

Reader Pick: Face Cream
Garnier Nutritioniste Moisture Rescue Refreshing Gel-Cream feels cool, making it perfect for summer. The antioxidant fruit-water extract and vitamin E help protect skin against environmental hazards. ($8, walgreens.com)
Expert Pick: Face Cream
Dr. Hauschka Skin Care Moisturizing Day Cream is light enough for all skin types. The calendula and witch hazel extracts, combined with nurturing oils, help balance skin, says makeup artist Lisa Houghton. ($40, drhauschka.com)
Expert Pick: Body Moisturizer
Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion features colloidal oatmeal, clinically proven to soothe and moisturize, says dermatologist Jeannette Graf, M.D. ($7, drugstore.com)
Reader Pick: Body Moisturizer
Aubrey Organics Unscented Ultimate Moisturizing Lotion is rich in organic sunflower and macadamia nut oils that keep skin soft. The neutral scent is a plus for sensitive skin -- and it doesn't compete with perfume. ($10, aubrey-organics)
Graveyard shifters aren't the only ones working overnight. Your skin is busiest while you sleep, repairing itself and sloughing cells. For the most powerful results, apply these expert-approved creams before bed to take advantage of prime skin-renewal hours. Of course, stick with the ultimate antiager -- sunscreen -- for daytime.

Antioxidant Cream
Dr. Andrew Weil for Origins Mega-Mushroom Skin Relief has science-backed antioxidant-rich mushrooms, says dermatologist Macrene Alexiades-Armenakas, M.D. It also soothes skin and helps diminish age spots, she says. ($66, origins.com)
Powerhouse Cleanser
Olay Pro-X Exfoliating Renewal Cleanser has gentle buffing beads (so tiny you can barely see them!) to help improve skin's texture. Removing dead cells helps antiaging creams better penetrate the skin and work their magic, says dermatologist Laura Skellchock, M.D. ($19, drugstore.com)
Tone Fixer
Revaleskin Night Cream with CoffeeBerry helps reduce fine lines and wrinkles, improves skin texture, and decreases facial redness on every skin type. All that, and it won't clog pores, says dermatologist Jeanine Downie, M.D. ($110, revaleskin.com)
Super Serum
Prevage Face Advanced Anti-Aging Serum by Elizabeth Arden can be used alone or under moisturizer, providing a serious dose of the powerful antioxidant idebenone and giving skin a luminous glow, Houghton says. ($155, shop.elizabetharden.com)
Zits, redness, and under-eye bags are obvious nuisances. But they're also signs that something is off. Think of these products on the following slides, selected by our expert panel, as yoga or meditation for your skin. You may claim there's no time for them, but incorporating these easy steps into your routine can help restore balance.
Eye Cream
Yes to Carrots Nourishing Moisturizing Eye Cream is paraben-free and features soothing aloe and green tea, which have anti-inflammatory properties, says dermatologist David Bank, M.D. Store it in the fridge -- applying it cold helps reduce puffiness. ($15, yestocarrots.com)
Skin Soother
Eucerin Q10 Redness Relief Soothing Anti-Aging Serum contains licochalcone, a skin-calming extract of licorice root. It suppresses an enzyme that breaks down the stress hormone cortisol, decreasing redness, says dermatologist Valori Treloar, M.D. ($13, amazon.com)
Acne Eliminator
Burt's Bees Natural Acne Solutions Targeted Spot Treatment has 0.75 percent salicylic acid (from willow bark), which helps reduce pimples without drying skin, says dermatologist Gervaise L. Gerstner, M.D. As we age, acne tends to migrate from the cheeks to the chin -- hormones and stress are factors. ($10, burtsbees.com)
