Eat Right Day 6: Snacks

Back to Week 2

Add
"Healthy snack" isn't an oxymoron. But avoiding bad snacking -- and the vending machines -- takes some prep.

When writing a grocery list, think about snacks along with your meals. Craving something crunchy-chewy? Go for nuts and dried fruit. Veggies and hummus satisfy a desire for savory. Buy a bar of dark chocolate (70 percent cacao) and snack on a few squares. Want salty-sweet? Melt the dark chocolate, buy some spelt pretzels, and dip them for a decadent high-fiber snack.

Snack Recipes
Spiced Hummus
Double-Dark Chocolate Biscotti
Basic Granola

Daily Snack Idea
Almonds and Dark Chocolate

Subtract
Resist choosing processed snacks high in sugar and sodium. Your body powers through them so quickly, it won't be long before you're craving more.

Keep Up
Stick with your food journal.

Eat Consciously
Pre-empt strong cravings by planning your snacks. Look at your food diary to figure out when you head for the cookie jar, then plan to eat a healthy snack about a half-hour earlier.
