The Natural Nursery
![]() Nothing starts a buying frenzy like knowing there's a newborn on the way. In come the new paint, furniture, toys -- and the chemicals they carry. Kimberly Rider, interior designer and author of the new book "Organic Baby," is hoping to change that. "Babies come into the world pure. Why bombard them with pesticides and petrochemicals?" First and foremost, Rider advocates purchasing organic mattresses and bedding, hardwood (not particleboard) furniture with nontoxic finishes, and low-VOC paints. She also recommends steering clear of plastic -- ubiquitous in baby goods -- which leaves chemical residues. "You can't make yourself crazy, though," she says. "Staying balanced as a parent is just as important." Her advice: Take a moderate approach and keep an eye out for these health- and ecofriendly baby amenities.
