A summer of sunscreen, frizz-control products, oils, and sea salt is enough to leave anyone's locks in need of a vacation. Start fresh for fall by giving your hair and scalp a deep cleaning with a clarifying shampoo or rinse.

"Use a clarifying shampoo once a month instead of your regular wash to get rid of the buildup that accumulates and to restore shine," says Louise O'Connor, a salon owner in New York City.

There are plenty of great clarifying shampoos on the market -- or, you can make your own.

DIY It
Apply 1 tbsp. apple-cider vinegar to hair and scalp after shampooing (or mix with your regular shampoo), leave on for 5 minutes, then rinse and condition.
