"I come from a very negative family, so when I had kids, I decided to make every effort to speak only positively to them. Instead of getting angry, I would redirect my words into something positive. For example, when they got peanut butter all over the kitchen, I'd take a breath and say, 'You guys must really like peanut butter!' It hasn't always been easy, but continually shifting negative remarks has helped their development. Our boys, now in their teens, are happy people who speak in a positive way to each other and their friends. I'm proud of my decision to discourage negative comments in our home."
