With breeding season about to start, do your part to help protect local feathered friends. Due to factors including habitat loss, global warming, and the spread of invasive species, more than 200 breeds in the United States need immediate help -- and nearly half of these varieties are declining rapidly.
The downturn has affected even typical backyard birds such as the chickadee, whose population has plummeted by 73 percent since 1967. It's all the more reason to put up a birdhouse, which provides a sheltered spot for cavity-nesting birds. Find one at your local garden store, or make your own by downloading species-specific instructions from birds.cornell.edu/nestinginfo.
