Although it's best known as a go-to herb for relieving menopausal symptoms, red clover has many more tricks up its sleeve. The plant has long been used to treat respiratory ailments like asthma and skin conditions such as eczema -- and it may help reduce the breast pain associated with menstruation. Red clover also contains a host of nutrients, including vitamin C and calcium, making it a great tonic.
Make Your Own
To get some extra vitamins into your diet, sprinkle these starburst-like purple flower heads in a salad. You can also make an infusion with the dried herb. Fill a quart-size jar with a cup of blossoms and cover with boiling water. Let steep for 4 to 10 hours. Drink 2 to 4 cups a day.
Red clover may thin the blood, so take precautions if you're using anticoagulant medication. Because it may alter hormone levels in the body, red clover may affect birth-control pill function, as well.
