With most beauty products, healthy choices become clearer after a scan of the ingredients. But tiny tubes of lip balm, and their equally tiny labels, can make this difficult. To avoid putting unwanted dyes, petroleum products, and preservatives near your mouth, mix up a batch of balm yourself. It's surprisingly easy, and the results beat many store-bought salves. Add peppermint and eucalyptus oils to heal a chapped kisser, or opt for a soothing vanilla- and rose-scented version. Either way, you'll have lip-softening relief right in your pocket.
Lip Balm How-To
Makes 4 tins, 1/2 ounce each
1 tablespoon beeswax pearls (also called pellets or pastilles)
1 tablespoon pure shea butter
2 tablespoons sweet almond oil
10-15 drops essential oils
Melt beeswax, shea butter, and almond oil together in the top of a double boiler or in a heat-safe bowl set over a pot of simmering water; stir continuously with a whisk. Once the ingredients are liquefied, remove them from heat. Whisk in essential oils. Working quickly, transfer the liquid to a measuring cup or a container with a pour spout and then divide it among four 1/2-ounce lip balm tins. Let balms cool completely until solid, about 20 minutes. Store in a cool, dry place.
Variation: Peppermint-Eucalyptus Lip Balm
Use 6 drops of peppermint essential oil and 4 drops of eucalyptus essential oil.
Variation: Vanilla-Rose Lip Balm
Use 10 drops of rose oil, also called rose otto, and 5 drops of vanilla oil, also known as vanilla absolute.

I have lupus and am supposed to stay out of the sun. I suppose if I didn't mind having my hair fall out and have my body covered in rashes it wouldn't be that big of a deal. Not everyone can be in the sun, Gina.
Staying out of the sun isn't always healthy. We all need the vitamin D and healing nutrients from the sun. Pretty much all sunscreens have dangerous chemicals in them that are worse for you then the sun. Sun light has also been known for helping to cure some skin cancers. The sun is not our enemy if we don't over do it of course. The chemical such as mineral oils and petroleum are our enemy's. This is a great recipe, great healthy all natural!
I found 1 oz. tins how many should I buy to fill up?
After many episodes of facial skin cancer surgeries, I now look exclusively for lip balms which have good quality sun screen ingredients. The best way to keep lips healthy and smooth is to stay OUT of the sun and to use sun screen. I might use this recipe to use at home perhaps after showering or in cold weather months.
If real beeswax is used, the resulting balm will taste and smell like honey. No scenting needed!
It's great to make your own, or buy, natural lip balms, but certain essential oils, such as mint, citrus, eucalyptus and lavender, are sensitizing and/or phototoxic on skin, which means they can cause damage to the skin cells. Vanilla is one of the few that are okay for skin.
Select Whole Foods sell beeswax in blocks. Our store sells two different sizes from a candle company called Big Dipper. Where can we find the tins for the lip balm?
Some Whole Foods sell beexwax in blocks. Our store sells them from Big Dipper and they are 100% beexwax. Where can we find the empty tins?

where do you find beeswax???
I have a child who is allergic to almonds and we avoid almond oil. what other types of oils could we use as a substitute?
DIY is fun and that's how I started my skin care business. If you want to choose a vegan lip balm then check out mine..www.lisaannskincare. It's made with candelilla wax (plant based) instead of beeswax. Otherwise you can can experiment with many different oils and essential oils too depending on your preferences. Have fun!
You could also try hobby stores - I've seen most ingredients there like the beeswax pearls. cheaper too if you have coupons.
you can buy them at whole foods market and at other health stores
