Whole-Wheat Chocolate Chip Cookies are a healthier twist on the classic, made with whole-wheat flour for a nutty flavor, while still packed with gooey chocolate chips for a sweet, satisfying treat.

Ingredients

  • For the dry mix:
  • 3 cups whole-wheat flour

  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder

  • 1 teaspoon baking soda

  • 1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt

  • For the wet mix:
  • 8 ounces (2 sticks) cold unsalted butter, cut into 1/2-inch pieces

  • 1 cup dark brown sugar

  • 1 cup sugar

  • 2 large eggs

  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

  • 8 ounces bittersweet chocolate, roughly chopped into 1/4- and 1/2-inch pieces

Directions

  • Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  • Prepare the dry mix: In a medium bowl, whisk together the whole-wheat flour, baking powder, baking soda, and kosher salt. Set aside.
  • Cream the butter and sugars: In a large bowl, combine the cold butter pieces, dark brown sugar, and sugar. Using an electric mixer, beat on medium speed until the mixture is creamy and well combined, about 3 minutes.
  • Add the eggs and vanilla: Beat in the eggs, one at a time, followed by the vanilla extract. Mix until smooth.
  • Combine the wet and dry mixes: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, beating on low speed until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.
  • Stir in the chocolate: Fold the chopped bittersweet chocolate into the dough until evenly distributed.
  • Shape and bake: Using a cookie scoop or spoon, drop rounded tablespoons of dough onto the prepared baking sheets, spacing them about 2 inches apart. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown and the centers are set.
  • Cool and serve: Let the cookies cool on the baking sheets for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
