A Sweet Potato Tofu Burger features a savory, plant-based patty made from mashed sweet potatoes and tofu, seasoned with herbs and spices, and served on a bun with fresh toppings for a wholesome, flavorful alternative to traditional burgers.

Ingredients

  • 1 medium sweet potato, cooked and mashed

  • 1 block (14 ounces) extra-firm tofu, drained and crumbled

  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (gluten-free if desired)

  • 1 tablespoon ground flaxseed (optional for binding)

  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika

  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil (for cooking)

  • Whole-wheat burger buns or your choice of buns

  • Toppings: lettuce, tomato, avocado, onion, ketchup, or your favorite burger toppings

Directions

  • Prepare the Sweet Potato and Tofu Mixture: In a large bowl, combine the mashed sweet potato and crumbled tofu. Add the breadcrumbs, flaxseed (if using), garlic powder, smoked paprika, cumin, salt, and pepper. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are well combined and the mixture holds together. If needed, adjust the consistency with additional breadcrumbs.
  • Form the Patties: Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each into a patty about 1/2-inch thick.
  • Cook the Burgers: In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Cook the tofu-sweet potato patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy on the outside.
  • Assemble the Burger: Toast the burger buns if desired. Place each patty on a bun and top with your choice of lettuce, tomato, avocado, onion, or any of your favorite burger toppings. Serve with a side of fries, salad, or your preferred side dish.
